Outstanding Female Caregivers to Celebrate On International Women’s Day
International Women’s Day falls on March 8th. Women worldwide care for aging parents, loved ones, their own families and even close friends sometimes. Some famous caregivers have become known as much for their accolades as they are for being amazing caregivers to their family members and others. Learn about these outstanding female caregivers during International Women’s Day.
Jann Arden
For years, Canadian singer-songwriter Jann Arden cared for her mother (Alzheimer’s). Her experience led her beyond her music career into the world of writing. She’s written several memoirs, including Feeding My Mother, which surrounds her experiences as a primary caregiver and her experiences parenting a parent.
Jodie Foster
Eight years ago, Jodie Foster gave a Golden Globe acceptance speech that tugged the heartstrings. It tapped into her struggles as both a mom and a caregiver to a parent with dementia.
It’s a speech where she said what many family caregivers know and feel, “I know you’re inside those blue eyes somewhere… I love you. I love you. I love you. And I hope that if I say this three times, it will magically and perfectly enter your soul….”
Nicole Kidman
In 2022, Nicole Kidman told reporters she’d returned to Australia to care for her mother (breast cancer). She was spending time making sure her mom is surrounded by family and taking her on fun outings.
This isn’t the actresses first time caring for her mom. She’s done this before as a teenager. At 17, Kidman also helped care for her mom after her mom was diagnosed with breast cancer and underwent chemo treatments.
Louise Penny
Mystery author Louise Penny is known for her award-winning Chief Inspector Armand Gamache series. She also was the primary family caregiver to her husband after his dementia diagnosis. Penny took to writing in the mornings while he was still sleeping. Once 10 a.m. hit, she’d stop everything and focus on quality care and ensuring he aged at home, just as he wanted.
Debbie Reynolds
Actress Debbie Reynolds (Singin’ in the Rain) became a family caregiver at the age of 14. Her mother developed heart disease in her 30s and relied heavily on her daughter’s help. Years later, Reynolds became the caregiver to her mother-in-law. As much as she could, she also helped her daughter, Carrie Fisher (Star Wars), during Fisher’s battle with addiction and mental illness.
